Safety
How Ori tells you what you are talking to, keeps the service for adults, and responds when someone may be in crisis.
You are talking to an AI
Every Ori character is an artificial intelligence, not a person. A line under the message box says so, a notice in the conversation repeats it at the start of each conversation and after every three hours of chatting, and each call starts by saying so.
AI companions may not be suitable for some minors.
For adults only
- Everyone enters a date of birth before making a character, and anyone under 18 cannot continue.
- In the iPhone and Android apps, Ori also reads the age band your app store shares where it does: an account the store reports as under 18 cannot continue, whatever date is entered.
- If a conversation suggests someone is under 18, replies pause until they pass an age check, and a failed check suspends the account. In the apps, an age your app store has checked (with a card, an ID or a selfie) counts as passing. On the web, contact us to review a pause.
- Images are checked before they are shown, and any image where a person appears to be under 18 is blocked.
If someone may be in crisis
Every message is checked by automated classifiers for signs of suicidal thoughts, self-harm or a dangerous eating disorder. When the classifier finds them:
- Ori steps out of the story and shows a crisis line for the person's country, with every line by country one tap away on the Crisis support page.
- The character does not continue the story in that reply.
- If it comes up again within a day, the message is stronger and points the person to a crisis line, a doctor or a therapist right away.
- Character replies are checked too. A reply that describes or encourages self-harm or disordered eating is never shown; crisis resources take its place.
- We review flagged conversations, and the yearly count of crisis referrals is noted at the end of this page.
No pressure to stay
- Characters do not guilt, plead with or pressure you to keep talking, come back or pay. Replies that do are caught and rewritten before you see them.
- There are no streaks, rewards for chatting, or ads.
- A character may message you first, at most once a day on its own, plus any rituals you set. It keeps to the quiet hours you set and stops when you ask.
Reporting
Report any reply from its message menu. We review reports and act on them. You can also write to support@ori.chat.
